Gemini and Google's AI Overviews are not the same channel. Something you observe in one doesn't prove visibility in the other. This guide keeps them apart and shows which parts of your business information are worth checking.
Treat AI Overviews and Gemini separately
Google describes AI Overviews and AI Mode as features of Google Search. The usual SEO basics apply; you don't need special AI files or special schema markup, and meeting the technical requirements doesn't guarantee that your page will be shown. [1] The Gemini app is a separate product with its own settings. Record which one you tested – app, Search feature or API – and don't mix the results.
Keep your business data correct – for people first
Google lists up-to-date Business Profile information as an SEO best practice for its AI features. [1] For local results, Google says ranking is mainly based on relevance, distance and prominence, and that you can't pay for a better local ranking. [2]
- Use your real-world business name, without added keywords, cities or taglines. [3]
- Choose as few categories as possible that describe your core business. [3]
- Keep services, phone number, hours and holiday hours current.
- Add real photos of your work, vehicles and team.
None of this implies a specific Gemini ranking. It makes your information correct wherever it is used.
Reviews without artificial targets
Ask real customers for honest feedback in a way Google allows: no incentives, no asking only happy customers, no telling people what to write. [4] Google suggests using a review link or QR code. [5] Don't buy reviews, and don't treat a made-up minimum number of reviews or star average as a requirement for AI recommendations. Check messaging and consent rules before you automate review requests.
Website basics that still matter
- Describe services, service area and contact options clearly, in text.
- Fix contradictory details on your site and profiles.
- Make sure Googlebot isn't blocked and important pages aren't set to noindex.
- Answer real customer questions on the right page.
Helpful answers can be ordinary visible text. If you use structured data such as FAQ markup, it has to reflect content visitors can see, and it doesn't guarantee an AI citation. [6]
A check you can repeat
- Write down the questions, language and location before you start.
- Test questions without your name separately from questions about your business.
- Note date, product (Gemini app, AI Overview, AI Mode), and whether you were signed in.
- Save the full answer and its links; score mention, recommendation, link and correct details separately.
- Repeat under the same conditions.
Frequently asked questions
Is Gemini the same as AI Overviews?
No. Record results from the Gemini app, Google Search AI features and any API separately.
Does a Google Business Profile guarantee a Gemini mention?
No. A correct profile helps customers and is a documented best practice, but it is not a promise of any particular AI answer.
Do I need FAQ schema?
No. Helpful answers can be normal visible text. Structured data has to match the visible content and doesn't guarantee an AI citation.
